Robert Horry played 16 seasons and won seven NBA championships but there was one thing he never did.
He never signed a certified autograph card showing him in a pro uniform.
Until now.
Panini America‘s new 2009-10 Season Update basketball set includes the first certified autograph card of Horry as a pro, his only second certified autograph ever as only Star Pics landed Horry on a University of Alabama draft picks card way back in 1992.
Horry has three cards in the set — cards limited to just 25, 50 and 99 copies apiece — and the first copy of the easiest card to find card sold online went for $75. That card shows him in a Los Angeles Lakers uniform.
The latest one to hit the auction block? It’s topped $100, though one can expect that those totals will come down as more cards are found.
Not bad, but not too surprising given the fact that he won titles for three franchises with pretty good fan bases — the Lakers, Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs — and Big Shot Rob is certainly a key inclusion for fans’ championship collections.
The Star Pics cards are rarely sold, but one copy of the card that books for just $10 recently sold for $64.50 online. The cards are signed on the backs with an authentication sticker atop a small part of the autograph. (These cards can be problematic for faking as the stickers could be removed from common players’ cards — the signed versions are the same as standard releases.)
The Star Pics card also hows how Horry’s signature has changed through the years when compared to his present autograph.
Now that Horry has a first NBA autograph, though, it might be the time for those long-time draft pick card holders to move them.
Why? There might be more collectors noticing the autographs of a guy who was pretty darn successful but may have been forgotten.
After all, he certainly was on certified cardboard.
