Family is a common thread in a lot of comics. It is in 2020 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces as well, which will showcase the art of David Palumbo. Palumbo is the son of Julie Bell and stepson of Boris Vallejo, the legendary fantasy artists who have done art for several trading card sets over the years including 1996 Fleer/SkyBox Marvel Masterpieces.


“As a life-long Marvel fan, I was stunned when Upper Deck asked me to work on Masterpieces, yet I also had this feeling like I had been training my whole actual life for this. It lit up my childhood memories and brought me back to that very early, very pure excitement,” Palumbo said. “This has easily been one of the most rewarding projects I’ve ever been a part of, and I hope that my joy for these characters comes through in the final result.”






2020 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces Overview

Like every Marvel Masterpieces set preceding it, this is another super-premium release. All base cards, which feature Palumbo art, have serial numbers, a more modern nod to adding upscale elements that wasn’t as prevalent during the line’s original run in the 1990s. The 90-card base set, which has a tiered structure once again, has multiple levels of parallels using things like color foil and Gold Ink Foil Signatures.


New to 2020 Marvel Masterpieces are Metallurgy parallels. These recreate the base set on metal stock.


What If? variations return. These transform the character-focused base cards into something resembling a more traditional comic cover. Preliminary Art variants show cards in the early planning stages as well as commentary from Palumbo on the creative process. Autographs are also available.







Additional inserts look to Marvel Masterpieces’ past. Among them are new lenticular Mirage cards. In the early Masterpieces sets, these represent some of the rarest and most valuable inserts. Here, the rarity continues. Mirage cards are case hits.


Battle Spectra metallic foil cards are another nod to the past. Canvas cards with textured card stock also return along with Gold Foil and Red Spectrum parallels. Three different Holofoil inserts are also on the checklist.







Of course, there are also sketch cards with original art on them from a variety of artists. Every box includes a sketch card.


Original artwork from Palumbo can also be found. He’s done one-of-a-kind Comic Book Sketch Covers. These are available as redemptions. There are also additional redemptions good for original paintings, preliminary art and uncut sheets.


It took Palumbo the better part of two years to create the 135 pieces of original art found in 2020 Upper Deck Marvel Masterpieces.
