2016 Upper Deck Marvel Gems Pays Tribute to Female Heroes



2016 Upper Deck Marvel Gems trading cards are dedicated to the ladies of the popular comic universe. Using a format that blends the premium configurations of Upper Deck’s Marvel Premier and Masterpieces lines with the insert focus of their Retro sets, the Marvel Gems packs a lot of variety into a small box.

It’s also the Marvel debut for Upper Deck Exquisite, which is considered by many to be the pinnacle of their high-end brands.

  

Base Set

The 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Gems base set falls in line with a lot of their recent comic sets. It has 60 cards, each featuring a Marvel female. While it’s not a big set, each card is numbered to 225.

Parallels come in three levels of varying quantities. The toughest have ten copies.


Inserts

It’s not just your regular inserts in this product. Rather, they use a mix of styles, textures and even materials. In doing so, 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Gems shifts some of the focus away from sketch cards. The art cards can still be found, but they average out to about 1:5 boxes.

Every box does have one Crystal Clear insert. These are printed on PETG, a stock that’s similar to acetate. A total of 20 cards make up the set. In addition to those are four parallels.

Diamond Mine bring the bling with anywhere from one to four manufactured diamonds embedded into the cards.

Keeping with the sparkle theme are Diamond Cuts. The cards are die-cut into gem shapes. The characters is printed on acetate inside the card.

Shadowbox inserts return in 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Gems. As they have in past Marvel Premier sets, these come with a layered look.

Gem-balaya is a play on Jambalaya, one of the most popular sports inserts of the modern era. Upper Deck did Jambalaya cards in their 2013 and 2015 Fleer Marvel Retro sets as well.



Marvel Exquisite

In addition to the main pack, every box of 2016 Upper Deck Marvel Gems has an Exquisite pack. These have their own mix of cards including Emma Frost Collection diamond skin cards. We’ll have to wait a bit to know exactly what those entail.

Exquisite base cards form a sort of set within a set. Artwork here, which is all original, is done by Ariel Olivetti, artist for Venom: Space Knight.
