By most accounts, last year’s premiere edition of Playbook Football ranked as one of the most successful debut products of 2011; certainly it kept popping up on best-seller lists in hobby shops across the country. But for the highly anticipated follow-up, Panini America is planning to pen an entirely new, completely engrossing chapter.

2012 Playbook Football releases in March and will be headlined by the fascinatingly re-engineered Rookie Booklet RCs, a shadow-box-type design featuring one jumbo prime-jersey piece, one jumbo jersey piece and an on-card autograph numbered to 149 or less (check out the preview below).

Every four-card box of 2012 Playbook Football will deliver one on-card-signed Rookie Booklet, one additional autograph and two additional memorabilia booklets; on average, three boxes in each 10-box case should yield three autographs (including one Rookie Booklet) and one memorabilia card.

Playbook’s base-set configuration includes 75 base cards, 100 Rookie Signatures and 35 Rookie Booklets, each with Gold, Platinum, Green and Black parallel versions.

Other 2012 Playbook Football highlights include . . .

• Playbook Materials: Booklets featuring from four to eight swatches of game-worn material spelling out unique words, numbered to 99 or less; look for Prime jersey versions numbered to 49 or less.
• Rookie Playbook Materials: Booklets featuring from four to eight swatches of event-worn material spelling out unique words for each rookie, numbered to 199 or less. Look for on-card autograph versions with two different die-cut phrases.
• Look for 1/1 Rookie Booklet RC versions featuring printing plates.
• Rookie Signatures: Autographs from the top rookies of the 2012 season, numbered to 149 or less. Look for Rookie Signature Black 1/1 versions.
• Accolades Signatures: Autographs from some of the best players the NFL has ever produced, numbered to 49 or less.
• Fabled Fabrics: Own a piece of NFL history with these a game-worn jersey cards from some of the NFL’s greatest legends, numbered to 99 or less; look for prime versions numbered to 49 or less.

The Panini America Drool Gallery: Sneaking a Peek Inside 2012 Playbook Football



In order to remain successful on the field, any good football team knows it’s imperative to continue refining, improving and expanding its playbook — and that’s precisely why Panini America officials have raised the bar considerably on 2012 Playbook Football, the highly anticipated sequel to last season’s debut product that seeks to redefine the NFL booklet card genre.

To that end, the company has redesigned the base Rookie Booklet RCs for 2012, incorporating intricate acetate die-cutting, player-worn memorabilia on both sides of the booklet and a shadow-box effect for the on-acetate autograph window, signaling an exciting new chapter for the category and pushing the creative limits on booklet-card possibilities. The results, as you’ll see in the preview gallery below, are quite spectacular.
In addition to those design enhancements, company officials also have added several unique phrase, nickname and characteristic die-cut versions (including some featuring eight pieces of memorabilia) for each of the 35 players who appear in the Playbook Materials rookie subset, and we offer a telling tease of those below, too.

The following cards are fresh from the Panini America production facility and have already been counted, cataloged and expedited to the respective players on them for signing. The next time you see these beauties, they’ll be autographed. But this early pre-ink peek should whet your appetite until then.

Panini America Provides a Rare Peek Inside Robert Griffin III’s 2012 Playbook (Gallery)



Panini America’s Ben Ecklar was on a mission last week, plan and simple. He departed Dallas for a quick trip to Virginia packing a one-track frame of mind, a video camera and a way-heavier-than-usual carry-on filled with what soon would become some of the most coveted trading cards of the entire 2012 NFL season.

Ecklar’s business appointment on this particular day was a rather substantial meeting with Washington Redskins 2012 Offensive Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III. Ecklar’s objective: Have RG III sign his 2012 Playbook Football and 2012 National Treasures Football cards and get them back to Dallas in time for packout. Mission accomplished.


As you’re about to discover, the results speak for themselves. Griffin’s poignant penmanship in concert with the devastating creativity of the 2012 Playbook designs work in unison to deliver some of the best-looking football cards you’ll see during this or any other season.

Luck in Las Vegas: Panini America Previews Andrew Luck’s 2012 Playbook Gems



LAS VEGAS — When Panini America officials arrived in Las Vegas for this week’s 2013 Industry Summit, they did so packing one essential ingredient: Lots and lots of Luck. Indeed, among the most precious cargo on board the flight from Irving, Texas, to Sin City were several sinfully good images of Andrew Luck’s 2012 Playbook Football masterpieces.

Freshly signed and fantastic to look at, the Playbook cards (as well as every one of Luck’s 2012 National Treasures Football gems) were autographed late last week in Indianapolis during a signing conducted by Panini America’s Jason Howarth and Brian Bayne. The following gallery, in concert with last week’s previews of Robert Griffin III’s Playbook cards, provide a clear indication of just how well 2012 Playbook Football is coming together.

Doug Martin Pens a Compelling Chapter for Panini America’s 2012 Playbook Football



One of the highlights of my 2013 so far was watching Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie sensation Doug Martin interact so brilliantly with New Orleans-area Pop Warner athletes during the 2013 Panini Pop Warner Skills Clinic at the Super Bowl XLVII NFL Experience. One of the highlights of my 2012 was watching Martin interact so brilliantly with opposing defenses.

The doubly dangerous Martin, a 2012 NFL Rookie of the Year finalist, rushed for 1,454 yards last season, caught passes for 472 yards more and scored 12 total touchdowns. As a result, Panini America’s top cards of Martin stayed atop collector want lists all season long. But the cards you’re about to see might just become the most in-demand Martin cards of all.

Indeed, Martin’s penmanship on 2012 Playbook Football — Panini America’s penultimate pigskin product of 2012 (say that three times fast) — is sure to be a topic of conversation when the product releases in the coming weeks. And it’s debatable as to what folks will be talking about most. Will it be the former Boise State Bronco’s autographed “Blue Turf” or “Valor” prime-memorabilia booklets? Will it be his base Playbook RCs? Who knows, but take a look for yourself below and let us know what you think.

The last few days at Panini America HQ have been nothing short of, well, fantastically frenetic. Between hand-collating 2012 National Treasures Football, shipping 2012-13 Select Basketball, and packing out both 2013 Triple Play Baseball and 2012 Playbook Football, it’s safe to say that things are taking place at a blistering pace. So blistering, in fact, that we’re bringing you the Quality Control Gallery for Playbook on Saturday of a holiday weekend.

You already know that the highly anticipated follow-up to one of last season’s best debut products includes the likes of Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Doug Martin, but there’s so much more to 2012 Playbook Football than just three of the top rookies of 2012. There’s also a whole new checklist of dramatically redesigned memorabilia booklets, rookie autographs and legendary memorabilia cards — and you’re about to see some of all of that in the gallery that follows.
