Major League Baseball lost its third family member on Monday when former Detroit Tigers pitcher Mark Fidrych was found dead on Monday afternoon after an apparent accident. He was 54.

“The Bird” burst upon the scene as a 21-year-old rookie with the Tigers in 1976, going 19-9 with a league-leading 2.34 ERA and 24 complete games. He was an All-Star and the AL Rookie of the Year that season but also something of a cultural phenomenon as he was animated — someone who would talk to the baseball, a pitcher who was a character long before “being Manny” was acceptable.

Fidrych was found underneath a truck he had been working on on the same day that Hall of Fame Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas died and just days after Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in an auto accident.


Fidrych’s career was a short one just five seasons, none of them as influentual as his first. His most memorable piece of memorabilia just might be his debut on the cover of Sports Illustrated on June 6, 1977 (above), alongside Sesame Street’s Big Bird, while his Rookie Card can be found in the 1977 Topps set (No. 265), which is valued at $3.

Fidrych appeared on 156 cards, according to the Beckett database, many of those obscure food issue cards from his first two seasons. His most valuable card is  a 1977 Wendy’s Disc, valued at $60.



He also signed for 20 certified autograph cards, most recently for 2008 Donruss Threads and 2008 Topps Co-Signers. His first certified autograph came in the 1999 Sports Illustrated Greats of the Game set from Fleer. It is valued at $40.

Although his career was a short one, he was remembered fondly by fans and “The Bird” signed more than a few autographs through the mail for fans and collectors alike.
