As the 2011-12 NBA season enters its final, championship-clinching weeks, last night’s NBA Draft Lottery selection process unofficially signaled the international basketball focus ever so slightly shifting toward the 2012-13 NBA season.

And nothing can usher in the start of next season quite like the new-card smell of the year’s first NBA trading card release: 2012-13 NBA Hoops.


Due out in August, 2012-13 NBA Hoops will once again tip off the basketball collecting season with a bang, delivering a massive 300-card base set including 72 true Rookie Cards, the celebrated first live RCs for members of both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 draft classes.

Playing on the hottest elements of last season’s NBA Hoops release, the new version will include the ultra-scarce Durantula insert (a nod to 2011-12′s Black Mamba and Blake Superior scorchers), autographed BuyBacks of original 1989-90 Hoops cards and a short-printed Champions base card. Each 36-pack hobby box of 2012-13 NBA Hoops will deliver two autographs.

New additions to the 2012-13 insert lineup include Draft Night Signatures, Kobe’s All-Rookie Team, Rookie Impact and Spark Plugs.

So, what did a 2011-12 NBA collecting season devoid of rookie autographs do to the demand for those cards in the first 2012-13 product of the season? While that’s more of a rhetorical question at this point, we’re glad we asked.

The fact of the matter is that the first autographs of 2012 NBA Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving and 2012 No. 1 overall pick Anthony Davis from Panini America’s 2012-13 NBA Hoops release have headlined a litany of staggering secondary-market sales recently. Staggering as in . . .$379 for an autographed version of Irving’s Rookie Impact insert . . . or $365 for an autographed version of his Rookie Card . . . or $299.95 for a redemption card good for Davis’ Autographed Rookie parallel.

The list goes on and on. In addition to the aforementioned $365, other copies of Irving’s autographed RC parallel have sold for $352, $312 and $300, respectively. And several of Davis’ autographed RC parallel redemptions have changed hands for between $162 and $200; meanwhile a redemption card for one of Davis’ Draft Night autographed parallels sold for $238.
