For the first time since releasing 2012 National Treasures Baseball — the product heard ’round the hobby world — early this year, Panini America is about to dip its toe back into the exciting world of high-end baseball releases. That usually spells good things for collectors.

But this time around, Panini America officials have come up with an entirely new product (2013 America’s Pastime Baseball), a few intriguing new bells and whistles, some downright spectacular pieces of Yasiel Puig memorabilia and just enough National Treasures.


Due out in late December, 2013 America’s Pastime Baseball will deliver one booklet card, three autographs, two memorabilia cards and at least two other cards numbered to 125 or less in every 10-card pack. The product also will incorporate National Treasures RCs of young stars such as Puig, Wil Myers and Manny Machado to name three. The product also will feature Rookie Booklets numbered to 99 or less that include three pieces of memorabilia and an autograph; these will be paralleled by Red (numbered to 49), Gold (numbered to 25), Green (numbered to 5) and Black (numbered to only 1) versions.

The historic developments and rich content are abundant in America’s Pastime, and include the debut of vertically oriented memorabilia booklet cards, the history-making first memorabilia cards of Frank Chance and so much more.

Every 12-box case of 2013 America’s Pastime is guaranteed to include at least one autograph, cut autograph, vintage memorabilia card or prime memorabilia card from one of the following players: Ty Cobb, Lou Gehrig, Honus Wagner, Chance, “Wahoo” Sam Crawford, Pete Rose, Derek Jeter, Ken Griffey Jr., Bryce Harper, Warren Spahn, Mike Trout, Rickey Henderson, Roger Clemens, Johnny Bench, Nolan Ryan, Mike Piazza, Yogi Berra, Mariano Rivera, Mike Schmidt, Reggie Jackson and Ernie Banks.

Patch Time: A First Look at the Memorabilia RCs in 2013 America’s Pastime Baseball



If you haven’t yet heard this rumor, let’s go ahead and see if we can get one started and take it viral: Upon seeing the first game-worn memorabilia Rookie Cards coming in 2013 America’s Pastime Baseball, Panini America officials contemplated changing the name of the product to America’s Patchtime. Again, that’s not necessarily true, but after feasting your eyes on the preview gallery that follows, you’ll understand why the thought crossed our mind.

Earlier this week we began receiving the first batch of just-completed memorabilia cards for America’s Pastime from the company’s production facility across town. Once they arrived here, the sets that require on-card autographs were expeditiously counted, cataloged and QC’d before being carefully prepared for shipment to the respective players on them for signing.

But before all of that happened, I grabbed as many images as I could of the cards in their pre-signed state because, well, when you see something as cool as the set’s National Treasures RCs, you owe it to your loyal collectors to show them off. That’s exactly what this post is designed to do.

One thing to mention before you start enjoying the gallery: The Yasiel Puig patch cards you’ll see will not be autographed, but we think you’ll agree that they’re still worth showcasing with this first batch of cards that will be.

An Open Book: Panini America Shares First Pics of 2013 America’s Pastime Autographs



Thanks to a dedicated effort from just about everyone inside Panini America HQ (Product Development, Acquisitions, Production) and the cooperative spirit of baseball legends and newcomers alike outside these walls, the book on Panini America’s 2013 America’s Pastime Baseball is in the final stages of being written. And from what we’ve seen so far, it has the makings of a bona fide best-seller.

Seemingly every new autograph that arrives (including some of the coolest dual-signed, vertically oriented booklets you’ve ever seen) is greeted by heartfelt “oohs” and “aahs,” the result of impeccable penmanship from an absolutely stacked checklist of baseball royalty. To be sure, the in-progress product has come a long way in the two short weeks since we brought you the first pre-ink peek. As a result, we felt compelled to give you a stunning visual update.

The star-studded cast of on-card signers who’ve already returned their America’s Pastime treasures (including Jose Canseco, Ken Griffey Jr., Chipper Jones, Mike Trout, Bo Jackson and more) has helped the product take shape in a big way. You can check out exactly what we mean in the gallery that follows.
