“Many have tried to imitate it, but there’s only one Topps Chrome.”
That’s the opening salvo on the sales materials for 2014 Topps Chrome, which Topps released on Monday. The hobby mainstay — and popular collecting substrate — will return once again on Aug. 27 with two autographs in every 24-pack hobby box.
There are a few new features this year with Silver & Black Refractors, which will be limited to 25 and signed in silver ink. Also new will be Topps of the Class autos, which have a bit of a Tribute feel, along with Topps Shelf, an Inceptionesque insert, and Topps All-time Rookies reprints. Also new — but old — are 1989 Topps Chrome cards that use the throwback design but in a different way as the cards are diecut.

The base set will consist of 220 cards — a mix of rookies and veterans from Series 1 and Series 2 Topps — and have 10 parallels per card. Each card will have four 1/1 printing plates as well as a 1/1 Superfractor along with Atomic (/10), Red (/25), Gold (/50), Sepia (/75), Black (/100), Blue (/199), Xfractor and standard Refractor parallels.
For the inserts, there won’t be as many parallels to chase. Topps Shelf will have 1/1 Superfractors and auto versions limited to 25. The Topps of the Class autos will be limited to 25 as well. The 1989 Topps Chrome cards also will have autos limited to 25.
Other autograph offerings in this one will include the auto rookies, which will be found with 10 parallels — 1/1 plates and Supers, Atomics (/10), the aforementioned Silver & Black, Red (/25), Gold (/50), Sepia (/75), Black (/100), Blue (/199) and standard Refractors (/499). Also to be found are Back-to-back diecut autos limited to five, Chrome Connections autos and Relics limited to 25 or fewer copies, auto Chrome buybacks limited to 10, dual autos limited to 10, triple autos limited to five and auto Relic patches limited to 1o.
Also packed out for collectors to chase will be redemptions for uncut sheets as well as an undisclosed number of base card variations.
A preliminary checklist was not released.
