Goodwin Champions is coming back with new patches, World War I relics and slew of new signers.

Each box of 2014 Goodwin Champions will come with 20 packs and five cards in each pack. There will be three hits per box that range from a number of different elements such as autographs, memorabilia cards, manufactured patch cards, Museum Relics and Goodwin Masterpieces.

Each box will contain 10 mini cards with the chance at getting Magician Back or Presidential Back parallels. Each pack will have a mini, short-print or insert.

On the case level, collectors will find five Origin of Species Patch cards, four Monster 3-D cards, one dual-swatch memorabilia short-print and one Sport Royalty memorabilia card.

Some of the hits are new to Goodwin Champions.

The manufactured patch cards are Origin of Species, and start a new three-year program for Upper Deck. The 2014 set will begin with The Dawn of Complex Life with six tiers of collectability: Reptiles, Fish, Cambrian Explosion, Arthropods, Tetrapods and Cephalopods. The checklist will include 100 cards of different degrees of rarity.



The 3-D Monster cards are a new addition to Goodwin Champions, and will be tough pulls. There are four subsets within the 3-D Monster cards: Bizarre Beasts (1 in 120 packs), Classic Creatures (1:360), The Giants (1:870) and Alien Menaces (1:4,160).



Goodwin Masterpieces Art of the Ages continues with 300 new paintings. Some of the additions include Vincent Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night, Picasso’s Old Guitarist and Cezanne’s The Card Players.



There are also Museum Relics from World War I, which Upper Deck recently displayed at the 2014 Industry Summit.

When it comes to autographs, Upper Deck has added some new, recognizable names such as Joe Montana, Peyton Manning, Lindsey Vonn, Ken Griffey Jr., Eric Dickerson, LaDainian Tomlinson and Byron Buxton. It also added a number of Winter Olympians including Shani Davis, Ashley Caldwell, Steve Holcomb, Julie Chu and Hayley Wickenheiser.

Goodwin Champions is set to come out in July.

Brag Photo: 2014 Goodwin Champions ‘Art of the Ages’ Painted Art Cards Came Out AMAZING!

When Upper Deck first announced they would be including one-of-one hand painted tributes to classical artwork in Goodwin Champions, collectors were hesitant. Could an artist really deliver a quality painting of a masterpiece on a canvas just 2 ½” x 3 ½” in size? As collectors soon discovered when opening up packs of 2013 Upper Deck Goodwin Champions, these artists were certainly up to the challenge and had created some beautiful works of art. The “Art of the Ages” cards became extremely popular regularly selling for hundreds of dollars as reported by Beckett Media.

The cards are a part of a three year plan in Goodwin Champions and we created the checklist in advance to make sure each year had some pieces that were widely known not just in the art community, but to the layperson as well. Work from renowned artists featured in the checklist for the “Art of the Ages” set includes Monet, Raphael, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Picasso, Renoir and many more. Recently we started to get in some of the completed cards and we had to pause to admire their beauty. The artists we commission are getting better at recreating this classical art and the miniature masterpieces they are bringing to life are amazing to behold. The level of detail they are able to add to these tiny canvases is extraordinary.  Just take a look at some of the images!

Redemption Free – All Autograph Content Live in 2014 Goodwin Champions from Upper Deck!

Serious collectors love hard-signed autograph cards that the athlete has actually touched and handled, but getting those completed and back in house in time for the product pack out is not always easy. This is especially true when the product is a hand-painted set that requires approvals from the athletes depicted. Therefore it is a major achievement for Upper Deck to release 2014 Goodwin Champions with zero autograph redemptions in the product and multiple versions of hard-signed autograph cards from some of the biggest names in sports. History and Art Come to Life in Upper Deck’s 2014 Goodwin Champions Set

There are so many elements that make Goodwin Champions a favorite with fans every year from the painted set to the hard-signed autograph cards, but more than anything, it is the different aspects of the set which really excite collectors. And one of the most compelling ways Goodwin Champions inspires collectors who open these packs are through amazing inserts series like the Museum Collection and Art of the Ages.

In 2014 Goodwin Champions the Museum Collection insert set focusses its attention on a huge conflict in modern history with the subject being World War I. Upper Deck staff have worked for months to acquire authentic memorabilia from this historic event and are making them available through rare insert cards found randomly in packs of 2014 Goodwin Champions. With different levels of rarity, these will be very exciting for collectors to find. Below is the checklist with some live imager. A good portion of these cards will be oversize cards that would not fit in a pack so they will be redemptions.





We have shared some imagery for the Art of the Ages cards previously, but as more and more came in, we were continually blown away by the quality of the cards the artists were able to deliver. Recreating classic art from the Masters is difficult enough on a normal sized canvas, but when you shrink it down to a 2.5” x 3.5” canvas, that is an entirely different ball game! This marks the second year of their inclusion in Goodwin Champions and 2015 will finish up this memorable series.

Animal Kingdom Patch Cards Evolve into Origin of Species Patch Cards in 2014 Goodwin Champions

The popularity of Upper Deck’s Animal Kingdom patch cards in Goodwin Champions, and the astronomical amount the cards sell for on the secondary market, has been well documented. The series ran its course last year after dominating the non-sports collectibles category for three years.

New this year is an interesting take on those popular Animal Kingdom patch cards as Upper Deck looks way back to the beginning of life here on earth with the Origin of Species set which features 100 cards with different levels of rarity of some incredibly strange creatures. There are different levels of rarity and as a rule, the higher your card number, the more rare it likely is. Here is a breakdown:



Cards OS-1 through OS-40 are Reptiles that fall 1:100 packs of 2014 Goodwin Champions on average.


Cards OS-41 through OS-60 are Fish that fall 1:260 packs on average.

The backs of the cards tell about the creature and what prehistoric era they lived in.
Cards OS-61 through OS-75 are Cambrians that fall 1:490 packs on average.


Cards OS-76 through OS-87 are Arthropods that fall 1:860 packs on average.

Cards OS-88 through OS-97 are Tetrapods that fall 1:1,715 packs on average.

And finally, cards OS-98 through OS-100 are Cephalopods that fall 1:8,565 packs on average.

To put together an entire set would be an incredible challenge, but we have seen collectors do it before. An important opportunity not to miss in terms of putting together the set it so jump on cards you see out there right away as the product is initially being opened as some of these cards you may only see a couple times.

One thing in particular these insert cards have done is bring in non-traditional collectors into the category. As we’ve learned more about the types of collectors who put these sets together they are educators, women and even kids collecting with their parents.

There is an educational aspect to these cards for sure, but they are also very striking and fans appreciate their beauty. This is the beginning of a three-year series for these cards that will ultimately lead us to dinosaurs!

The Elements Return to 2014 Goodwin Champions!

One of the more polarizing insert cards potentially ever created came in last year’s Goodwin Champions set in the form of a redemption card. The reason being is that the cards were so thick that they could not fit in a pack and production delays kept them from being completed for quite some time. It was one of the more grandiose ideas Upper Deck’s product development team had ever tried; to actually include elements from the Periodic Table into a booklet trading card.

Don’t just think about the challenges of actually getting these cards done, just imagine what Upper Deck’s legal team said to the brave souls in Product Development when they shared the concept of these cards. The legal team was adamant the samples be secured in some type of chamber or acrylic to keep people from potentially being exposed to them. Oh, and they shot us down right away on putting Plutonium in a trading card.

The group worked through countless challenges to ultimately deliver a strong representation of the Periodic Table to customers in the 2013 Goodwin Champions The Elements set. Collectors were extremely fired up when they started to receive these, taking to social media sites to share the news. And NEW cards for The Elements set are back for 2014! We actually produced them all at the same time so the new cards for 2014 Goodwin Champions are ready to ship right when collectors redeem them. They truly are some incredible cards. Take a look at the checklist for both years along with some of the cards!
