Next year’s Topps Heritage baseball set means it’s 1966 all over again.

Topps unveiled the first looks at its long-running baseball card brand’s next edition on Monday with 2015 Topps Heritage being a brand that arrives on March 4 with one autograph or Relic in every 24-pack hobby box.

The model here is largely the same as past Heritage releases with 425 cards in the base set capped by 75 short-prints. Returning for next year are throwback team uniform photo variations as well as action image variation cards that will only be found in hobby boxes. Also back will be mini versions limited to just 100, Chrome cards with Black (/66) and Gold (/5) parallels. The back variations from the last few years continue with blue being the ink of choice for this year.



As with past releases, Real One autos are back with past and present players signing in standard blue ink and with red-ink versions limited to just 66 copies. Also to be found are Real One dual and Triple autos with the duals limited to 25 and the triples limited to just five. Also returning are Clubhouse Collection auto Relics limited to 25, CC dual auto Relics limited to 10, Flashback auto Relics to 25 and 1/1 1966 Cut Signatures.

Two new additions can be found in the Relic lineup with triples and quads in the mix. Quads will show four players and be limited to just 10 copies, while triples are limited to 25 and duals are limited to 66. The standard Relics are not numbered but will have a Gold parallel limited to only 99 copies once again.

The Heritage lineup would not be complete without a selection of buybacks and alternative Relics and this year’s lineup includes Lost In Space, Get Smart and Batman buybacks from 1966 along with Rub-offs from the sports card world. Those will all be stamped with a 50th anniversary logo. Also back are postage stamp Relics and hobby-only coin Relics that include nickels (/15), dimes (/10), quarters (/5) and half-dollars (1/1s) embedded into the cards.

For traditional insert cards, there are four familiar offerings in Heritage — New Age Performers, Then and Now, Baseball Flashbacks and News Flashbacks.  These will take a look back at 1966, of course, while 1966 ad panel cards will be box-toppers along with originals buybacks and 1966 Oversized Punchboards. These hobby-only newcomers to Heritage styled after the 1966 game will have an insert version limited to 50, a jumbo patch Relic, autographs limited to 10 and auto jumbo patches also limited to just 10 copies.

A preliminary checklist and autograph subject list was not released.

What errors might be in 2015 Topps Heritage? Start with a look back at 1966 Topps …



With the release of the final checklist for 2015 Topps Heritage coming any day now in advance of the product’s arrival next Wednesday, we’ll know a bit more about the ways Topps is adding a chase to this year’s throwback issue, which is a re-imagining of the 1966 Topps brand.
We already know that we’ll have throwback uniform and action image variations on top of the more-standard 75 short-printed cards in the set. We’ll find out precisely what those cards are the second a checklist arrives.
But the rarer error variations? Those aren’t typically revealed, so now it’s time to guess on which cards in this year’s set will have variations based on mistakes made back in 1966.


There are just 10 cards in the original 1966 set that have an uncorrected error, or UER. Only a single card — No. 101, a checklist — had a variation after an error was corrected. This year’s set caps out at just 500 cards (Nos. 426-500 being SPs), so emulating three of the cards below based on card numbers alone will not be possible.

Personally, I’d check all of these numbers (save for Nos. 502, 544, 583) first when ripping into packs, particularly if the players on the 2015 cards share the same teams as the originals. That won’t be a coincidence.

We’ll update this piece right here when variations are confirmed.

The checklist for this year’s Topps Heritage baseball card set is here from Topps and the trip down memory lane will include some surprises as we revisit 1966 in the packs of today.

Among them? Cut autographs of Dick Clark, Fats Domino and Red Skelton alongside autographs of Bryce Harper, Mariano Rivera, Rusney Castillo and Sandy Koufax.

Back this year will be action image variations and throwback uniform cards where photographs showcase retro threads worn regularly in MLB. Also back from a few years ago are color swaps where the color design is altered on some rarer cards.

At retail there will be 15-card tributes to Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax — A Legend Begins will be Ryan cards in Target packs, while Koufax will have his A Legend Retires cards found at Walmart.


As with previous years, Nos. 426-500 will be short-printed cards. Among the players found here this year will be Jacob deGrom, Harper, Yasiel Puig, Jose Altuve, Jon Lester, Craig Kimbrel, Justin Verlander, Albert Pujols, Yu Darvish and Mike Trout to name a few.

Also back will be mini base variations as well as Chromes — those sets will be skip-numbered with notables from throughout the set showcased.

The base set will include nods to the past such as a team card for the San Francisco Giants on card No. 19 — just as it was in 1966 — teammates showcased on card No. 99 (this time it’s the Angels’ Trout and Pujols, last time it was the Buc Belters) and likely matching variations to go with the UERs in the original set.

Among the subjects in the News Flashbacks set are Batman, Star Trek, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and the NFL/AFL merger to name a few, while Baseball Flashbacks will focus on Ernie Banks, Willie Mays and Sandy Koufax for starters.

Among the past players signing for this one will be Al Kaline, Bob Friend, Brooks Robinson, Choo Choo Coleman, Ernie Broglio, Jim Gentile, Juan Marichal, Lou Brock, Orlando Cepeda, Steve Carlton and Tracy Stallard, while the multi-player auto checklists include the likes of Hank Aaron, Fergie Jenkins, Bo Jackson, Mike Trout, Nolan Ryan, Clayton Kershaw and Miguel Cabrera.

Among the baseball cut autographs to be found will be Don Drysdale, Harmon Killebrew, Joe Nuxhall, Roger Maris, Ron Santo, Tug McGraw, Walter Alston, Willie Stargell and Woodie Held.

Players signing for auto Relics will include Anthony Rizzo, Buster Posey, David Wright, Freddie Freeman, Manny Machado, Mike Trout, Yasiel Puig, Hank Aaron and Steve Carlton to name a few.

Notable players with Relics in the release will include Derek Jeter, Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, Juan Marichal, Mike Trout, Roger Maris and Willie Mays among others.

Topps puts bubble gum back in packs … sort of




Collectors ripping into packs of 2015 Topps Heritage today will have a chance to find something they haven’t found in packs of baseball cards in some time.

Bubble gum.

Well, sort of. Topps has created “gum damage” versions of cards in the set where an area of white residue exists on the back of the card. If it’s scratched, it smells like bubble gum — just like when Topps first arrived with this look back in 1966.

According to Topps, there are three different patterns to the stains and can be found on all 500 cards in the basic set.
