The vibrant color of 2015 Topps will be Chromed.

Topps revealed the first glimpses at 2015 Topps Chrome on Friday — the debut of a hobby staple that will arrive once again with a rainbow of Refractors for every player on Aug. 5.

Packing two autographs per box or five autographs per jumbo box, Chrome will carry a 200-card base set this year comprised of players who appeared in both Series 1 and Seires 2 of the standard Topps release.



This year, the Refractor Rainbow will include nine shades — standard, Prism, Purple, Blue, Green, Gold (/50), Orange (/25, hobby-only), Red (/5) and Superfractors (1/1). All but standard and Prism Refractors will be serial-numbered, but those volumes were not announced.

On the retail front, there will be Sepia Refractors as well as Pink Refractors for collectors to chase, too.

Rookies will make up a significant part of the autograph crop with seven types of Refractors to find — and all will be serial-numbered. They are standard, Purple, Blue, Green, Orange (/25), Red (/5) and 1/1 Supers. The Orange and Supers will be hobby-only releases.

Four new insert sets will arrive this year with varying degrees of difficulty. Chrome Culminations will be found one per hobby case with 20 notable players showcased. These also will have Red Refractor and Superfractor versions as well as autographs. Chrome Commencements will note 20 young stars with these being hobby-only cards. They’ll also have Red (/5) and 1/1 Superfractor versions. Future Stars inserts will showcase 20 key rookies with four types of parallels — Gold, Orange, Red and Superfractor versions to chase — while Gallery of Greats will add a Chrome twist to the Series 1 insert with Gold, Orange, Red and Superfractor versions.

Four types of autograph inserts will also be found here with Illustrious Autographs showcasing top rookies and veterans. These will have Orange, Red and Supers, while Dual and Triple autos will also be limited. Duals will be limited to 10 with a Red (/5) and Super version, while Triples will have those as well as printing plates. Returning this year will be Thrill of the Chase Diecut autos where notable milestones will be noted with a Red and Superfractor parallel, too.

A preliminary checklist was not released.

Topps has confirmed that five key rookies were last-minute additions to 2015 Topps Chrome Baseball. And all five are short prints.

When the product was first announced, the base set was advertised as having 200 cards. However, when the final checklist was released, it reached 205 cards with the final five players all being recent call-ups.

Although 2015 Topps Chrome Baseball isn’t scheduled to release officially until August 19, it is already showing up in some retail locations. As some began to open the product, they quickly discovered that the five high numbers were tougher to pull. This was confirmed by the card maker on their Topps Talk podcast.


The 2015 Topps Chrome Baseball rookie short prints are Carlos Correa, Noah Syndergaard, Byron Buxton, Francisco Lindor and Joey Gallo. All five players are some of the most highly regarded rookies to debut this year. These are also the first base set rookie cards for each as well.

Because planning for sets is done months in advance, particularly for the base set, it can be tricky to add call-ups.

“We had to go back to press for these,” said Topps Chrome brand manage Zvee Geffen during the podcast. “That basically means we had produced the files and had to get the presses rolling again. So those five guys are in the product but they won’t fall quite as frequently as a few of the others. But we felt it was important to get those cards in there.”

Odds of the 2015 Topps Chrome Baseball rookie short prints weren’t announced, but those who have opened retail in some bulk suggest they combine to land about one per case. No Refractors for these players have yet to appear.

New checklist: 2015 Topps Chrome Baseball checklist is out



The latest edition of Topps® Chrome® Baseball is set to come out on August 19. Collectors have been patiently awaiting the checklist to learn which rookies will have autographs.

2015 Topps Chrome Baseball includes a number of the top rookies and rising stars such as Kris Bryant, Byron Buxton, Jung Ho Kang, and Noah Syndergaard.

Thrill of the Chase die-cut autographs showcase milestones selected players are chasing in 2015 such as Clayton Kershaw getting to 100 wins and Mike Trout reaching 100 home runs.
