Heritage High Number is back in packs beginning on Sept. 23.

Topps revealed the details on 2015 Topps Heritage High Number on Wednesday, a product that makes a return in pack form for the first time since 2009. Topps released the Heritage update in packs in 2008 and 2009 along with a few basic Topps Update cards in every pack before placing the season-capper into boxed set form in 2012, which has been the routine since then.
This second helping of the 1966 Topps design will include one autograph or Relic in every 24-pack hobby box with a base set that begins with card No. 501 and adds 225 more cards to the overall set. This allows for 2015 call-ups to get their shot on a retro-styled Heritage card.



While the final 25 cards in the set will be short-printed, there also will be other cards to chase. Action image variations return as do Blue backs, minis (for 50 players; /100) and the standard Chrome parallels — Refractor (/TBD), Black (/66) and Gold (/5).

Inserts for this one will be a new batch of what we saw in the first series with some new inclusions, too  — Rookie Performers, Now and Then, Award Winners and Combo cards.

For autograph collectors, there will be a new batch of Real One autos with Red parallels limited to 66 copies. There also will be Real One dual autos limited to only 25 as well as 1/1 1966 cut autos. For fans of auto Relics, the Clubhouse Collection cards return with auto Relics limited to 25 and dual auto Relics limited to 10.

For standard Relics, there are a few options — Clubhouse Collection (with Gold parallel /99), Clubhouse Collection dual (/66), Clubhouse Collection triple (/25) and Clubhouse Collection quad (/10).

Box-toppers will be back for this release, too, with ad panels (three-card strips), 1966 Topps buybacks and the 1966 Punchboards. Those will be limited to only 50 copies for the standard one with a jumbo patch Relic version limited to 25, an autographed version limited to 10 and a jumbo patch auto version also limited to 10.

A preliminary checklist was not released.

2015 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball looks to have unannounced surprises



It’s still a couple of days away from its official release, but it looks as though 2015 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball is taking a page from the earlier set. Although Action Image and Color Swap variations were announced in advance and included on the checklist. But based on some early info from breakers and retail sightings, it looks like there’s a lot more 2015 Topps Heritage High Number that is arriving unannounced.


At this point it’s early and things could change once packs start getting ripped in larger quantities, but here are some things to look for.



Black and White

Case breaker brentandbecca, as he’s also known on Twitter, posted this image this afternoon.



According to brentandbecca, the card came from a retail pack but additional reports suggest they’re a case hit that can be found in retail as well. Signs also point to the cards being more of a parallel than a variation. It’s unknown whether every card in the set has a Black and White card or if it’s only a partial parallel set like the Chrome cards and Minis.



Wood Grain/Glossy Back Parallels

The name of these might change when more surface, but there have been multiple reports of cards that have a wood grain texture on the front. It doesn’t sound like they’re wood cards like the Allen & Ginter Minis or the ones found in Triple Threads, though. These cards are also distinct on the back with a glossy finish. Some have described it as the regular front feel is now on the back and vice versa. Either way, it seems that these could be on the subtle side.

Both the Black and White and Grain cards look to be landing at about the same general rate as the Blue Back parallels (1:375), which are limited to ten copies each.



Gum Stain Backs

Hopefully you don’t have the fall cold right now because some of your 2015 Topps Heritage High Number cards could have the sweet smell of nostalgia. Gum Stain Backs, which debuted as a surprise in 2015 Topps Heritage return. These have small bits of synthetic gum on the back that are easily missed. Besides looking like old-school gum stains, they also have a bubble gum scent. Gum Stain Backs are inserted 1:43 hobby packs.



Variation Codes

If Action Image and Color Swap cards are the only variations, they shouldn’t be hard to spot. But the codes in the small print on the back can confirm things for you as well.

According to brentandbecca, base cards have two codes, 79 and 84. Base set short prints end in 89.

Action Image variations 94 while Color Swap variations end in 95.

Usually, it’s the variations that make up the surprises in a product and the parallels are anything but. However, it looks like 2015 Topps Heritage High Number Baseball flips the script. The product has a couple of unannounced parallels spicing things up. But it looks like the 2015 Topps Heritage High Number variations are exactly as planned.

We think.

Variations come in two forms, both of which continue on with themes from 2015 Topps Heritage Baseball. Action Image Variations use different photos. Rather than using posed shots and portraits, the come straight from games. These are inserted 1:22 hobby pack or a little more than one per box.

Color Swap Variations use the same photo as base cards. The difference is in the banners on the front that hold the player’s name and team. Variations have black banner backgrounds instead of colors. At 1:76 packs, these are quite a bit tougher to pull than Action Image Variations but still not terribly difficult.

If you want to be absolutely certain whether you have a base card or variation, the fine print on the back can also help. Base cards end in 79 and 84. Base set short prints end in 89. If you pull an Action Image Variation, 94 is what the code ends in. Color Swap Variations finish with 95.
