The first baseball card set revealed for 2016 is a high-end brand that was a bit of an enigma this year.
It’s 2016 Topps Tribute, a hit-based continuation of the brand that faced printing issues this year and a recall of the product as autographs arrived out of packs with ink concerns. But perhaps making up for all that next year will be the arrival of Superfractors and Chromax printing technology to offer a new twist for the brand.
The rest of the Tribute model also returns with three autographs, three Relics and six parallels in every hobby-only box when it arrives on Feb. 24.
New for 2016 will be Tribute Tandem books that pair past and present stars (limited to 25 serial-numbered copies), and Triple Crown Memories — a set that focused on 1966 and the 50th anniversary of Triple Crowns from Frank Robinson and Sandy Koufax. These cards will be numbered and have Red (/5) and 1/1 Black parallels just like the Tandem books.
The base set size was not revealed, nor was a preliminary checklist, but there will be a mix of past and present stars as well as 10 short-printed top rookies. The main players will have Green, Purple, Red (/5) and 1/1 Black, printing plate and Superfractor versions, while Rookies found two per case will have all but Green versions.
Among the Relics will be standard Tribute Relics, Stamp of Approval, Prime Patches and Milestones. The first two will have six parallels — Green and Purple (/TBD), Orange (/25), Red (/5) and 1/1 Black and Superfractor cards. The Prime cards (/TBD) will have Red (/5) and 1/1 Black and Superfractor versions. Like recent years, the Milestone cards will have MLB Authentication on every swatch and be limited to 10 with a 1/1 Black Jumbo parallel.
The autograph lineup will include past and present stars with a rainbow like the rest of the product, while Foundations of Greatness and Rightful Recognition will have the same. New for 2016 will be Ageless Accolades, a set that focuses on past MVPs with each having a Red (/5) and 1/1 Black parallel.
