First there was a tease, now there are the details.

Topps released the basic breakdowns and even more images for 2016 Topps Series 1 baseball card set on Monday, and it’s clear that the forthcoming release of the hobby’s longest-running and most-popular brand is a departure from the norm.

What hasn’t changed is that collectors can expect one autograph or Relic in every 36-pack hobby box or one autograph and two Relics in every HTA 10-pack Jumbo box when it arrives on Feb. 3.




Basic set and parallels

This time,  the base set for 2015 Topps Series 1 will consist of 350 cards — the same higher amount that began this year — and it will be a mix of rookies, veterans, league leaders and include a subset of World Series highlight cards. Each card will have nine types of parallels, including Gold (/2,016), Vintage (/99), Black (/65), Pink (/50), Platinum (1/1), Rainbow, Clear (/10; standard hobby boxes only), Framed (/TBD; one per case) and 1/1 printing plates. A preliminary checklist was not released.


Inserts

There will be nine types of non-hit inserts in this one, and with 2016 being an election year, we’ll see the return of politicians with Presidential Candidates. Also to be found are Berger’s Best, a year-by-year look back at basic Topps, Perspectives, Pressed into Service, 100 Years at Wrigley Field, Back to Back, Topps Laser, First Pitch and also two stanmped buybacks per box. The Laser cards mark a 20-year anniversary of an experimental diecut insert from the past and this time the approach is used in booklet form. Pressed into Service cards will show players in non-traditional roles, while the Wrigley set will revisit past moments in the venue’s history. First Pitch, like this year, will showcase celebrity appearances at ballparks.

A selection of manufactured Relics can be found in this one with Team Logo Pins, No-hitter Pins and World Series Stamp and Coin cards. The first two here will have autographed parallels limited to only 25 copies, while the coin/stamp cards will have denomination versions and some will have autographs (/10) as well. All will be numbered, but no volumes were announced.

Also to be found are Bunt Code cards and Bunt Player cards that offer an extra way to get into Topps’ mobile apps game for MLB where virtual baseball cards have been generating real cash for some collectors. Codes will be good for in-game tokens or exclusive cards found only with the redeeming of the card.



Autographs

There will be eight types of autographed Relics alone in this one with most of these cards limited to 10 copies and none of them made to more than 50. That makes them among the toughest pulls in 2015 Topps Series 1. Berger’s Best, Topps Laser, Back to Back, Pressed and Wrigley inserts will be limited to 10, while the World Series winners and Postseason Performance will be limited to 50. A set of Glove Leather autos — signed onto simulated leather like Sweet Spot cards of the past — will be limited to 25.

For standard autographs, there will be Scouting Report — a chance for scouts to sound off about players’ performances — Berger’s Best, Laser, Back to Back, Pressed, Wrigley, World Series and Postseason. These will all be limited to 25 except for Series and Postseason, which will be limited to 50. A pair of 1/1 inclusions will also be found here with Berger’s Best cut autos as well as a standard cut auto set.




Memorabilia

Nine different game-used memorabilia sets will be found in this one with the same lineup as other inserts — Scouting Report, Berger’s Best, Laser, Back to Back, Pressed, Wrigley, World Series and Postseason. The only new one here will be In the Name Relics that are 1/1 letter patches from players’ 2015 MLB All-Star Game workout jerseys. These will be found in hobby and jumbo packs only along with the Laser Relics. All standard Relics will be numbered to 99 or 100 save for the Scouting Report, which will not be numbered.

Sano, Schwarber, Owens, Seager highlight strong group of Rookie Cards in 2016 Topps Baseball Series 1



2016 Topps Baseball Series 1 is going to hit the shelves on Feb. 3, marking a special occasion for baseball fans and collectors. It arrives right before Spring Training making it the unofficial start of the countdown until baseball season arrives.

2016 Topps Baseball Series 1 is filled with old and new as Topps is celebrating 65 years of baseball cards. Collectors can find a tribute to Sy Berger, the person who made baseball card what they are today, a look at the history of Wrigley Field and 350 base cards looking back at 2015 and looking forward to great young stars.

But one thing every baseball fan loves to find – a player’s first Rookie Card.

2016 Topps Baseball Series 1 has no shortage of Rookie Cards with more than 30 players getting their first official MLB Rookie Card. Those players include many highly touted rookies that made their debuts late last season.

2016 Topps First Pitch checklist includes Mo’ne Davis, Jordan Spieth, Kristaps Porzingis



Actors, golfers, professional skateboarders — 2016 Topps First Pitch covers some massively varied ground when it comes to its featured subjects. And, at this point, not a lot of names are known.

The insert set returns for a second year, immortalizing some of the folks who kicked off games with the ceremonial toss. The focus the first time around varied but, understandably, much of the attention went to the celebrities. Many of the most popular from 2015, like Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, don’t have many cards so they were a novelty on several fronts.

When the 2016 Topps Series 1 checklist was released, a couple of things were missing. The first are the traditional photo variations but those are never announced in advance. The First Pitch inserts were also left to be a surprise.

Jordan Spieth is one of the most notable. Winner of both the 2015 Masters and U.S. Open, the young golfer had yet to have a traditional trading card outside of one included in an issue of Sports Illustrated Kids magazine. This is the first Jordan Spieth card to arrive in pack form. That said, he’s wearing a Red Sox jersey and throwing a ball rather than a collared shirt and putter.

Mo’ne Davis was the first girl to pitch a shutout in the Little League World Series, making the achievement in 2014. While it would have been great to have a card of the teenager then, this is a notable alternative.

Kristaps Porzingis, arguably the rookie making the biggest splash in the NBA this season, makes his baseball card debut. The Knicks standout took to the mound before a Mets game last June.

2015 finally saw horse racing get another Triple Crown. Victor Espinoza, who was the jockey on American Pharaoh, is part of the First Pitch set.

While most everyone on the 2016 Topps Series 1First Pitch checklist can be seen as a hero in some form, a couple take that embodiment to a new level. Gabrielle Giffords is a politician from Arizona who survived an attempt on her life during a public rally in 2011. Rebekah Gregory was injured during the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 while protecting her young son. And then there’s Evelyn Jones, who threw out a pitch at a Mariners game last July at the age of 108.
