Remember when Jose Canseco and Ichiro pitched? 2016 Topps Pressed Into Service does.



There’s something funny about a position player taking to the mound. The score is probably ugly and the bullpen worn out. Rather than tiring them out for no real reason, bring in an outfielder or second baseman and at least there’s a glimmer of entertainment and novelty on an otherwise gloomy day. 2016 Topps Pressed Into Service is an insert set that delves into some of those moments, creating pitcher cards for players normally known for playing elsewhere in the field.


Pressed Into Service has a ten-card checklist. And the list of position players moonlighting as pitchers features some impressive names. Ichiro is likely the freshest memory for most. He came out of the Marlins bullpen to pitch an inning against the Philadelphia Phillies last October.

And who could forget Jose Canseco? In May, 1993, he pitched against the Boston Red Sox. Not only did it come just three days after a ball bounced off his head for a home run, but the 33-pitch stint on the mound wrecked his arm. The slugger required Tommy John Surgery in July and missed the rest of the season.

Hall of Famer Stan Musial is also in 2016 Topps Pressed Into Service. And while he’s known as one of the game’s greatest batters, Musial actually started out as a pitcher. On the final game of the 1952, Musial took to the mound to face Frank Baumholtz of the Cubs. The two were battling for the batting title. Musial threw one pitch, a grounder to third.

Besides the basic version of the set, select 2016 Topps Pressed Into Service cards have separate autograph and relic versions.
The cards are randomly inserted in packs of 2016 Topps Series 1 Baseball.
