2016 Topps Update Series Baseball Features Rookies, Traded Players and Fire
No, 2016 Topps Update Series Baseball is not returning to those brightly colored factory sets. Sorry, if it got more than nostalgia running for a second. But what the product does do, like old-school Topps Traded, is offer players in new uniforms and rookies who made their debuts too late for the 2016 Topps Series 2 Baseball checklist. It also has a mix of new and ongoing inserts as well as some Update Series continuity of its own in the form of All-Star-themed memorabilia cards.
Base Set
The 2016 Topps Update Series Baseball base set has 300 cards. This is down significantly from the 400 cards that made up the 2015 set. It’s also 50 cards smaller than both the Series 1 and Series 2 sets. Still, it’s enough to capture key rookie debuts from 2016 as well as key players finding themselves in new uniforms. 2016 All-Star Game and Home Run Derby participants also figure into the base set.
Parallels start with the moderately easy-to-pull Rainbow Foil (1:10 packs) and Gold (/2016). On the tougher side are Black (/64), Pink (/50), Printing Plates, Platinum (1/1) and Silver Frame (1/1). Black, Silver Frame and Printing Plates are all exclusive to hobby and hobby jumbo packs.
Autographs and Memorabilia Cards
The base set isn’t the only place where the 2016 All-Star Game in San Diego is prominent in 2016 Topps Update Series Baseball. All-Star Stitches and its various versions make up a significant portion of the hits in the product.
As it has been for years, All-Star Stitches comes with swatches from All-Star workout jerseys. Parallels for the basic cards comes in Gold (/50) and Platinum (1/1).
All-Star Stitches Duals and Triples mix up different combinations of players from the Mid-Summer Classic. Both of these are numbered to 25. The triple-swatch cards can only be found in hobby and hobby jumbo packs.
On the premium side are All-Star Jumbo Patches (/6), All-Star Stitches Autographed Relics (/25) and All-Star Jumbo Patches Autographs (/6). Both styles of jumbo patch cards can’t be found in retail packs.
Own the Name relics return for another year. These have a letter from the nameplate from the back of a game-used jersey. Although each is a one-of-one, players will have multiple cards as they spell out their last name.
2016 Topps Update Series Baseball has a couple of manufactured relic sets as well.
500 Home Run Club Same cards have a stamp issued the year they hit their milestone homer.
3,000 Hits Club Medallions come with a specially designed coin embedded in them. Parallels come in Gold (/25), Platinum (/10) and Platinum Autograph (/10).
For those looking for additional signatures, there’s Scouting Report Autographs. These cards combine ink and advanced analytics.
Inserts
Inserts are highlighted by the first-pack inserted Fire cards for baseball. After debuting as a standalone set in football a couple of years ago, Fire arrived in baseball as online-exclusive prints in 2015. Now the cards, which have standout designs by digital artist Tyson Beck, are getting a more traditional release. These land 1:8 packs.
Chasing 3000 (1:8) carries on from Series 2, highlighting key hits for Ichiro as the future Hall of Famer approached the major milestone.
Continuing with a similar theme is 3000 Hits Club (1:6), which spotlights players who have already made it.
First Pitch (1:6) comes back for a third round of celebrity and other notables throwing out the ceremonial toss. This time, they come from the 2016 season. In addition to the regular First Pitch cards, there are relic versions that come with a ticket stub from the featured game embedded in them.
2016 has seen Topps partner with several other companies. There was the Marketside Pizza cards found at Walmart. Then Topps worked with New Era on some limited edition Bryce Harper cards. 2016 Topps Update Series Baseball features Team Franklin (1:8), an insert that highlights players who are sponsored by the batting glove company. This is the second set of Franklin inserts in 2016 Topps products. 2016 Topps The Mint has cards with game-used batting gloves made by the company.
Select players in all of the basic inserts except for First Pitch have autographed versions as well. Fire, Team Franklin and 3000 Hits Club Autographs are all numbered to 25. Chasing 3000 Ichiro autographs are each one-of-ones.
