Nostalgia continues to be the running theme in 2017 Donruss Baseball. It really shouldn’t be a surprise as this is the angle the brand has used since Panini dusted it off in 2014.

Coming in on the more affordable end of Panini’s baseball offerings, the product has a lot going on between the base set, parallels, inserts a plenty, autographs and memorabilia cards. Hobby boxes come with three hits.


Despite being the kind of product that set builders often gravitate towards, the exact size of the 2017 Donruss Baseball base set hasn’t been announced yet. That said, it looks to have a similar configuration as the past couple of years with Diamond Kings and Rated Rookies leading things off. Both are staples to the Donruss brand dating back to the 1980s. Diamond Kings land five per hobby box. Each also has two of the 15 Rated Rookies. Depending on how big the rest of the set is, these should be short prints but not overly tough.

At first glance, the base card design takes from the one used in 2016 and mashes it up with 1990 Donruss Baseball minus the scarlet borders.

Variations return. These fall under a few different categories including switched photos, changes to the text, color alterations or a mix.

Parallels should also be abundant, although what they encompass here is still unknown other than there are seven per hobby box.
The 1983 Donruss Baseball makes a comeback in the form of a Retro insert set. Inserted almost two per pack, these take the general design from the 24-year-old set and apply it to new players and cards. These also have autographed versions.

Among the other autograph offerings in 2017 Donruss Baseball are Signature Series and Significant Signatures. Both have seven levels of parallels: Blue (/199 or less), Red (/99 or less), Gold (/49 or less), Purple (/25 or less), Pink (/10 or less), Green (/5 or less) and Black (1/1). These parallels also apply to Retro 1983 Autographs.

While these focus on current and retired players, Promising Pros Materials Signatures switch gears to rookie and young players.

New to 2017 Donruss Baseball are Diamond Collection memorabilia cards. A mix of rookies, veterans and retired players are included on the checklist.

One of the standout parts of 2016 Donruss Baseball was the inclusion of autographs and memorabilia cards from the San Diego Chicken. The iconic mascot is back with a new triple memorabilia card. It has portions of his suit, vest, fur and feet. Signed versions are also available.

The familiarity on the 2017 Donruss Baseball checklist continues into the inserts with Elite Series and Dominators cards.

Panini America’s fabled Donruss Baseball franchise is more than just the company’s flagship hardball release. It’s also the quintessential way to begin any baseball collecting season. Boasting a bevy of old-school niceties (such as variations, Rated Rookies and Diamond Kings, to name three) and just enough new-school flair (including the new Whammy chase insert), 2017 Donruss Baseball arrives next week as a robust, red-white-and-blue reminder of everything that rocks about collecting a new season.


The many staples that have made Donruss Baseball a collecting icon for more than three decades return for 2017, including the aforementioned Rated Rookies and Diamond Kings as well as Signature Series autographs, The Rookies, Dominator, The Elite Series, Masters of the Game and more. 2017 Donruss Baseball also provides a bevy of SP and variation chases highlighted by nicknames, black-and-white photography, Pink Back and Blue Back versions, Aqueous Tests and more.




The product releases in hobby shops across North America one week from today and, on average, each hobby box (eight cards per pack, 24 packs per box) will deliver three autograph or memorabilia cards.
