2017 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball Continues with the Ultra High-End Trend





2017 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball joins a growing list of ultra high-end products from the card maker. While boxes come with nine autographs and a relic, they also arrive with a price tag over $1,000.



Autographs

Basic autographs in 2017 Topps Diamond Icons come in three forms: Autographs, Red Ink Signatures and Diamond Autographs. All have at least 40 players, mixing current and retired stars. Each has Purple (/10), Red (/5) and Gold (1/1) parallels.





Autographed Jumbo Patch cards (/25 or less) all come with MLB Authentication holograms. This means they can be traced to a specific game through MLB’s website. Parallels are available in Purple (/10), Red (/5) and Gold (1/1).

Other signed memorabilia inserts include Autographed Relics (/10), Single-Player Autographed Dual Relics (/10) and Dual-Player Dual Autographed Relics (/10). Given their already smaller print runs, these have only Red (/5) and Gold (1/1) parallels.




Cut Signatures are inserted every other box. As many cards are included, none numbered higher than 4. Gold parallels are one-of-ones.

Memorabilia Cards

Basic relic cards are limited to 10 copies or less. That’s what Single-Player Relics and Dual Book cards are numbered to. They have Red (/5) and Gold (1/1) versions as well.





Diamond Relics (/3) come with actual diamond embedded in them.

Spikes used jumbo pieces of game-used cleats. Base versions have ten copies while Gold cards are one-of-a-kind.




Rounding out the relics are MLB Silhouetted Batter Logo Patch cards (1/1).

As you might expect from such a big cost, all autographs in 2017 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball  outside of cut signatures are on-card.

All cards in 2017 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball are numbered to 25 or less.

Needless to say, this looks to be another product with an extremely low print run. How rare?

Although not on the same scale as 2016 Topps Transcendent‘s 65 boxes, Diamond Icons looks to be no higher than 1,000 total boxes. The sell sheet says that every other box has a cut signature card. It also suggests around 100 total players with cut signatures. Base versions having a maximum print run of 4 plus one Gold parallel. That means no more than five cuts for any given player or 500 total cards. With “or less” in play, it’s very possible that some players don’t have five cards. So 1,000 boxes looks to be the high estimate.

This is based on initial information, which is subject to change. Even if that number is off, it doesn’t look like 2017 Topps Diamond Icons Baseball has a very big production run.
