It’s dark days once again with 2021-22 Panini Obsidian Basketball. The volcanic-inspired chromium line opts for black over silver, creating a unique look and making for some distinct inserts.
Hobby boxes contain just one pack of seven cards. Of those two are autographs and two are either inserts or parallels.
2021-22 Panini Obsidian Basketball Checklist Details
The base set sticks with traditional Obsidian black backdrop. Players are cast out front with an action photo. Behind them, photos are reduced to abstract outlines.

These play into the Electric Etch parallels. Rather than the rainbow shine that Prizm, Select and other chrome sets give off, Obsidian’s parallels get colorful outlines. Electric Etch Purple (/99), Orange (/50), Green (/25), Yellow (/10), Red (/5) and White Mojo (1/1) are among those available in hobby boxes.

One exception is Blue Flood, which get the full-color treatment. Although not serial numbered, according to Panini, these are tough short prints.

Autographs in 2021-22 Obsidian Basketball are numbered to 149 or less.

Freshmen figure into Rookie Jersey Autographs, one of the only places to find memorabilia on the checklist, and Rookie Eruption.

Aurora Autographs and Galaxy Autographs are places to find veterans and retired players.

The set also has some other insert sets like Magnitude, Pitch Black, Supernova and Tunnel Vision.

Vitreous and Volcanix, both of which have die-cut designs, are among the release’s rarest cards.
