Panini America Delivers Detailed First Look at 2016 Contenders Football (Gallery)



It’s a product known the collecting world over by one powerful name: Contenders. Of course, it’s also called something else: The Home of the Autographed Rookie Card. By any name, though, Panini America’s Contenders Football franchise remains one of the most popular products in collecting history. And that reputation will be well preserved when the highly anticipated 2016 Contenders Football arrives in hobby shops across North America in late December.

Bolstered by the fabled Rookie Tickets Autographs Rookie Cards and a host of venerable inserts, 2016 Contenders Football is set to deliver some of the most in-demand Rookie Cards of the talent-rich 2016 NFL Draft Class. On average, each hobby box will deliver five or six autograph (including one or two RPS Rookie Tickets), three Rookie of the Year Contenders, two MVP Contenders, two Legendary Contenders, two Round Numbers, one Touchdown Tandem and two additional parallels or inserts.

The highlights of 2016 Contenders Football are many and include . . .

• The popular Rookie Tickets set feature autographs of the top rookies and includes numbered Playoff Tickets, Championship Tickets, Cracked Ice Tickets, Super Bowl Tickets and Printing Plates parallels.

• Find autographs of top legends and veterans in the Legendary Contenders Autographs, MVP Contenders Autographs, NFL Ink and Super Bowl MVP Autographs inserts.

• Chase key inserts such as Rookie of the Year Contenders, MVP Contenders, Legendary Contenders, Touchdown Tandems and Round Numbers, pairing top rookies selected in the same round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

• Look for hobby-exclusive Golden Tickets and Silver Tickets.

• Draft Class Autographs features signatures from the top 2016 rookies and includes Gold (numbered to 16) and Platinum 1/1 versions.

• Find autographs from some of the greatest NFL players of all time in Legendary Contenders Autographs (numbered to 49 or less).

• Look for autographs of 20 top contenders for the NFL MVP Award in an MVP Contenders insert numbered to 49 or less.

• A 390-card base set that includes Season Tickets, Rookie Tickets, Rookie Ticket Variations and Coaches Tickets. Look for Cracked Ice (numbered to 24) and Printing Plate 1/1 parallels.

The Panini America Quality Control Gallery: 2016 Contenders Football (117 Sweet Pics)



It’s quite ironic, really, that one of the NFL’s most iconic trading card releases year in and year out bears the name “Contenders.” After all, it’s so much more than a contender every single year. It’s more like a trading card champion, an immediate Product of the Year front-runner packing landmark Rookie Ticket autographed Rookie Cards, variations, short prints and a compelling array of inserts honoring the game’s greatest superstars, veterans and young stars.

And so it is with the highly anticipated 2016 Contenders Football, which has been quality controlled, packed out and is on its way to hobby shops across North America. The product officially goes live on Friday and in anticipation of that monumental day, we’re bringing you a deep dive into this year’s edition with a must-see Quality Control Gallery.


On average, each hobby box of 2016 Contenders Football delivers at least five autographs, but many will deliver more than that. Each hobby box also contains a Gridiron Digital Contenders Rookie Ticket Gold Ink Signature for fans of the Panini NFL Gridiron digital app.

Look for Rookie Ticket Autographs of newer rookies who have broken out this season like Tyreek Hill, Jalen Richard, Adam Thielen, Eli Rogers, Dwayne Washington, Robert Kelley and more.

Short Report: Panini America Starts Sharing SPs, SSPs in 2016 Contenders Football




Panini America’s ballyhooed 2016 Contenders Football arrived in hobby shops yesterday to a ready-and-waiting collector base that has spent the last 24 hours since in a wrapper-ripping, Rookie Ticket-revealing frenzy. That’s certain to continue in the weeks ahead as the many Contenders completists work on building their sets, with one eye always on the set’s various variations and short prints.

Today, we’re going to devote some attention to clarifying or demystifying some of the set’s SP and SSP mysteries. The initial list below details some of the SPs and SSPs featured in 2016 Contenders Football’s Rookie Tickets, Rookie Ticket Variations (horizontal) and Rookie Ticket Variations Sepia sets. For 2016 Contenders Football, an SP indicates cards with a print run of 250 or less; an SSP indicates cards with a print run of 99 or less.
